Gutter Repairs or Replacement?: The Warning Signs

Gutters need to be repaired once they start to leak. But at what point does a replacement for your gutters become more cost-effective? Rapid Roofing, your go-to contractor in the state for all your residential roof service needs, lists some of the warning signs below.

Are There Any Signs of Damage?

Replacing your gutters would make more financial sense if the damage is particularly severe. Different types of gutters are susceptible to varying degrees of damage. For example, relatively moderate damage may be considered extensive for one type of gutters, but not for another.

Before getting into the specifics, we’ve listed the common signs of gutter damage:

  • Cracks in and water leaking out the gutters
  • Gutters that are pulling away from the roof
  • Loose nails sticking out of gutter hangers or other fastening mechanisms
  • Sunlight passing through the gutters’ back and onto the fascia
  • Water stains on the fascia
  • Vegetation or animal nests in the gutters

Other issues that possibly stem from gutter leaks, but may also be caused by other factors include the following:

  • A flooded basement
  • Rot on your window sills, deck or garage doors
  • Cracked paint on your siding
  • Cracks in your driveway or any concrete pavement outside your home

What the Type of Gutters Is Installed?

If you find flooding in parts of your home or cracks in your foundation, it can mean two things. Either tiny drops of moisture have been leaking out for some time. In which case, the damage is likely manageable and can still be repaired. Or, it could be that the damage was so significant that rainwater leaked continuously. In most cases, the only way to be sure is to have a roofing company inspect your gutters and roof.

If, however, you have seamless gutters, and you find any of the aforementioned signs, it’s likely that your gutters will need to be replaced. This is because seamless gutters are installed in one continuous piece and, therefore, have to be completely replaced. But if you’re still unsure about whether or not to replace or repair your gutters, consult a qualified contractor.
